Formal Orthogonality on an Algebraic Curve

Formal orthogonality on an algebraic variety for polynomials is deened and studied. Examples are given. Vector orthogonal polynomials of dimension d are proved to be orthogonal with respect to points on the unit circle.

Global divisors on an algebraic curve

If L is a field and R a subring of L, we define the lattice Val(L,R) as the lattice generated by symbols VR(s) for s in L with the relations 1. 1 = VR(r) if r is in R 2. VR(s) ∧ VR(t) 6 VR(s+ t) 3. VR(s) ∧ VR(t) 6 VR(st) 4. 1 = VR(s) ∨ VR(s) if s 6= 0 Contrary to the Zariski lattice, we cannot in general simplify an expression VR(s1) ∧ . . . ∧ V (sn) to a single basic open VR(s). Two exceptions...

A note on Abelian varieties embedded in quadrics

We show that if A is a d-dimensional abelian variety in a smooth quadric of dimension 2d then d = 1 and A is an elliptic curve of bidegree (2, 2) on a quadric. This extends a result of Van de Ven which says that A only can be embedded in P when d = 1 or 2. Mathematics Subject Classifications (1991): Primary, 14K05; secondary, 14E25, 14C99.

The Singular Locus of the Theta Divisor and Quadrics through a Canonical Curve

A section K on a genus g canonical curve C is identified as the key tool to prove new results on the geometry of the singular locus Θ s of the theta divisor. The K divisor is characterized by the condition of linear dependence of a set of quadrics containing C and naturally associated to a degree g effective divisor on C. K counts the number of intersections of special varieties on the Jacobian...

A Note on Detecting Algebraic Cycles

The purpose of this note is to show that the homologically trivial cycles contructed by Clemens and their generalisations due to Paranjape can be detected by the technique of spreading out. More precisely, we associate to these cycles (and the ambient varieties in which they live) certain families which arise naturally and which are defined over C and show that these cycles, along with their re...
